Island Campus Webinar—Student-Led Discovery: Exploring Energy, Ecology, and Art on Allen Island

October 10th, 2025, noon–1:15 p.m.
Online

Join us for a special Island Campus Lecture Series event featuring 2025 Island Campus Student Fellows Lachlan Bailey ’27 and Rachel Hernandez ’27, who will share insights from their summer research on Allen and Benner islands.

Lachlan Bailey ’27 will present his work on tidal energy generation in the St. George’s Channel, including the creation of a 3D water velocity model and the potential use of a Portable Underwater Generator (PUG) to support the Island Campus’s transition to net-zero energy. Rachel Hernandez ’27 will discuss “Allen’s Alternative Field Guide,” her creative project documenting the island’s flora through alternative photographic techniques such as cyanotypes and lumen prints.

The conversation will also include Dr. Whitney King, Miselis professor of chemistry and director of the McVey Center for Computational and Data Sciences, who will share a preview of what’s ahead for the Island Campus—highlighting plans for the new Center for Resilience and Economic Impact and Colby’s broader goals for sustainability and experiential learning.

Don’t miss this opportunity to hear directly from the students and faculty helping to shape the future of Colby’s Island Campus.
