Le Grand Siecle: Classicism and Baroque in French 17th-century Art
"Speak to me of nothing small," Louis XIV of France famously declared when he met Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The art of France in the 17th century is indeed that of the Grand Siecle, the century of Versailles's grandeur, a celebration of the French king's absolute monarchy-but there is much more to it. This romp through the National Gallery's collection of French 17th-century art will make us travel through time and space: from the riches of Versailles, to Rome's artistic circles, and to peasant and bourgeois life in Lorraine.
